Learners impressed judges with confidence, creativity, and digital skills at a local speaking competition. In an inspiring display of talent and confidence, Rand West City Libraries hosted a lively public speaking competition for high school learners in Mohlakeng. The event took place at Mohlakeng Ext 7 Library on Thursday, 30 April 2026.

The competition brought together learners, educators, and community stakeholders for a day filled with powerful storytelling, reading, and spelling challenges. The support of ECD Officials made the campaign possible.

The event aimed to promote a culture of reading while also building learners’ confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills. In a modern twist, participants used mobile devices to download stories, showcasing how technology and that education can work hand in hand. Learners were judged on public reading, storytelling, story reviews, and spelling, with many rising to the challenge and delivering impressive performances.

As Rand West City Librarian, Miss Thandeka Legae encouraged learners to keep reading beyond the competition:

Reading must become part of everyday life. It’s the key to lifelong learning.”

Adding to the praise, Librarian Assistant Mrs Ria Van Tonder from Ventersdorp said:

“Learners showed real courage. They stepped up, though on their feet, and pushed beyond their comfort zones.”

At the end of the day, participants were awarded certificates and prizes, recognising not only their performance but also their bravery and dedication.

Final Word

From shy readers to confident speakers, Mohlakeng youth proved that the future is bright and full of powerful voices waiting to be heard.
