NPA Vows to Oppose Bail for Teacher Accused of Raping Grade 4 Learner
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that it will oppose bail for a 59-year-old teacher facing a rape charge involving a nine-year-old learner at Busisiwe Primary School.
Kabelo Temba appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court on 21 October 2026 after handing himself over to the police earlier that day.
The case stems from allegations that Temba raped the learner in the school toilets on 6 October. The child reportedly disclosed the incident to her mother on the same day, but the matter was only reported to the police on 10 October.
The accused’s case has been postponed to 29 October, when he is expected to make a formal bail application.
The prosecution has indicated that it will oppose his release, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the fact that the alleged victim is a minor.
The NPA has reiterated its firm stance on cases involving alleged sexual offences against children, stressing the importance of prosecuting such matters with sensitivity and diligence.
The case has placed renewed focus on the protection of children in educational settings and the responsibility to ensure that schools remain safe environments for learners.
Temba is expected back in court on 29 October for the bail proceedings. The allegations against him have yet to be tested in court.
