Discovery Alex Schools League Celebrates Young Football Talent as Skeen and Dr Knack Claim 2026 Titles

Established in 2009, Discovery Schools Soccer has grown into one of Johannesburg’s leading youth development platforms, reaching more than 860 schools and 100,000 young participants since its inception.

The programme provides structured playing opportunities for primary and high school boys and girls, while investing in the broader football ecosystem by upskilling more than 10,000 coaches to date. Beyond the game, Discovery Schools Soccer promotes leadership, sportsmanship, personal growth and essential life skills that extend far beyond the field.

The 2026 season featured an extensive fixture calendar, including the Discovery Boys’ and Girls’ Festivals, the Primary and High School Knock-Out Cup Finals, the Discovery JVW Diamond League Playoff, and the season-ending Discovery Alex Schools League.

Launched in 2013, the Discovery Alex Schools League was established to create access and connections, inspire excitement and learning, and, most importantly, deliver meaningful and sustainable impact through sport. School educators play a hands-on role in coaching and supporting the teams, demonstrating the powerful role football can play in strengthening community connections.

The seven week long, round-robin Discovery Alex Schools League caters to under-13 boys and girls. Managed by the Department of Education in consultation with Forwardzone, the programme has helped create a pathway for aspiring footballers, with numerous players progressing to compete in the Sasol League, the ABC Motsepe League and the Hollywoodbets Super League.

The 2026 participating teams comprised of Emfundisweni Primary School, Bovet Primary School, MC Weiler Primary School, Pholosho Primary School, Skeen Primary School, Zenzeleni Primary School, Carter Primary School, Ekukhanyisweni Primary School, Ikage Primary School, Iphuteng Primary School, Dr Knack Primary School and Gordon Primary School.

In the Girls division, the Final took place between 2025 champions Zenzeleni Primary School versus Dr Knack Primary School. With the full time score at 1-1, it was time for a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, won by Dr Knack Primary School 3 goals to 2.

The Boys Final was equally as tight between 2025 champions Skeen Primary School and Iphutheng Primary School. But it was Skeen Primary School who retain their title, netting the only goal of the game, and thus winning 1-0.

The 2026 Discovery Alex Schools League attracted close attention from local league association clubs, with scouts on hand throughout the competition to identify promising young talent.

With 12 schools participating, the 3 Square Sports Stadium in Alexandra was buzzing with energy as athletes gave their all from the opening whistle to the final whistle, each eager to impress the scouts and earn an opportunity to join the next generation of sporting stars.
