A 58-year-old Malawian national named John Gambi, who was arrested on Monday, April 1, 2024, at the Rand Easter Show in Nasrec for possession of fake US dollars, has been remanded in custody by the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Gambi was apprehended at the annual Easter Show event after he attempted to purchase perfumes from a stall using fake dollars.
According to the Hawks captain, Lloyd Ramovha, the stall manager recognised him from a previous transaction on Thursday, March 28, 2024, where he bought perfumes using what was later established to be fake currency. The accused managed to get away with about R3600 in change on that occasion.
“The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team was summoned to the scene, and Gambi was arrested on the spot. He was found with 10 fake US dollars,” added captain Ramovha.
The case has been postponed to April 9, 2024, for a formal bail application.
