For many children, the school day begins with books, lessons, and the hope of a better future, but for some vulnerable learners, it begins with an empty stomach.

African Child at Work NPO is working to change that reality by providing primary school learners with nutritious breakfast before they head into the classroom.

The Soweto-based organization hosted a midweek breakfast program on Wednesdays, 12 September 2026. The event was held at Lepelaar Street in Soweto, where learners were served cereal and a cup of soup.

The initiative aimed at helping children start their school day with energy while improving their concentration, confidence, and ability to focus on their academic work.

For some families experiencing financial difficulties, providing daily meals remains a significant challenge. As a result, some children rely heavily on school feeding schemes for their meals.

As the founder and director of the African Child at Work NPO, Mr. Thabiso Masigo said the organization wants to support vulnerable children that hunger doesn’t stand in the way of their education:

“Our aim is to provide this cereal and a cup of soup in the morning for learners from vulnerable families to support them in their academic journey. This nutritious breakfast would help with their level of concentration and confidence.”

Mr. Masigo further stated, “Some of the children only eat through the school’s feeding schemes due to family challenges and financial burden, and also that affects their academic performance.”

For the beneficiary, Kamogel Mokoena, the breakfast provides more than just food:

“This breakfast of cereal and a cup of soup helps us with energy and concentration at school. One can’t focus on an empty stomach, but having a nutritious breakfast helps sharpen your mind and body.”

Learners were able to stop by the breakfast initiative in their way to school to receive cereal and a cup of soup.

For the African Child at Work Organization, the message is simply: a child who is not hungry has a better chance of concentrating, participating, and learning.

Through initiatives like this, the NPO hopes to bring relief to vulnerable families while giving learners the nutritional support they need to pursue their education with confidence.
