Awareness Campaign Marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking of Children and Women

SANCA Central Rand unites communities to protect children and women. On Friday, 26 June 2026. SANCA Central Rand proudly hosted a successful campaign, held at Gold Harvest Rehabilitation Centre, Randburg, to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The event brought together community stakeholders committed to protecting children and women from the devastating effects of
substance abuse and illicit trafficking.

The primary objective of the awareness was to educate children and young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse, the risks associated with illicit trafficking, and the importance of making healthy and informed choices. The campaign also promoted the creation of safe, supportive, and drug-free spaces where children can grow, learn, and reach their full potential.
Addressing the audience, SANCA Central Rand Board Chairperson Miss Arlene Lapa highlighted the importance of collaboration in safeguarding young people:
“Prevention is everyone’s responsibility. By working together across communities, we can help young people make positive choices and reduce the harm caused by alcohol and substance abuse.”
Lapa further stated, “We thank Aware.org, our schools, sponsors, government partners, staff and community members for their continued commitment to protecting young people and strengthening prevention efforts.”
Her message reinforced the need for partners, schools, government departments, businesses, and community organisations to work hand in hand to protect children from drugs, alcohol, and exploitation.
The campaign also recognised the critical role that schools and families play in nurturing children in safe, healthy environments that encourage positive development and resilience.
Aware.org‘s board member, Mr Andrew Ross, encouraged young people to value their future by making responsible decisions:
“Every young person deserves the opportunity to make informed decisions about their future, and there’s no reason why anyone under the age of 18 should consume alcohol. The #NO18 pillar is about prevention, protection, and positive youth development by ensuring young people have the knowledge and confidence to choose differently. Our partnership with SANCA Central Rand demonstrated the value of a sustainable community-based prevention programme. When young people receive the right information, support, and environment, meaningful change is possible.”
The SANCA Central Rand extends its sincere appreciation to all partners and stakeholders whose participation contributed to the success of the campaign. Together we reaffirm our commitment to creating safer communities, where every child can grow free from drugs, alcohol, violence, and exploitation.
The awareness concluded with an interactive engagement session, where learners had the opportunity to speak directly with participating organisations and learn about the free prevention education, counselling, and support services available within their communities.
