CITY BUSTS TYRE BURNING SYNDICATE IN BRAKPAN
The net is quickly closing in on law breakers across the city. This became evident when the Ekurhuleni and provincial Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs) including law enforcement agencies pounced on a tyre burning syndicate in Brakpan on Wednesday, 08 October2025.
Almost 300 tyres were discovered on site, ready to be burnt by the perpetrators to extract the wires believed to have scrap metal value.
According to the City’s Integrated waste management by-law, Section 41(3); ‘No person may recover or dispose waste tyre in a manner that has the potential to cause pollution of the environment or harm to health and well-being. (4) The owner of the vehicle will be held accountable for his/her vehicle if the vehicle is caught illegally transporting waste tyres.
Burning tyres is illegal and harmful to the environment.’
The EMPD impounded the vehicle used in the commission of the crime and transported the confiscated tyres to the national waste tyre bureau.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environmental Resources and Waste Management Cllr Leshaka Manamela visited the area where the tyres were stored today, 9 October and said in addition to confiscating the tyres and impounding of the vehicle involved, fines will be issued. “We therefore caution against this act and support EMPD to do their work to bring those in the wrong to book,” Cllr Manamela said.
Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activities they see around them to law enforcement or the city’s call centre on 0860 543 000
