Clapham and Queenswood claim provincial glory at Kay Motsepe Schools championship

The 21st edition of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship Gauteng Provincial Football Finals sponsored by the Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam, concluded with a spectacular display of young talent and competitive spirit on Saturday, September 13.

Held at Clapham High School in Pretoria, the tournament showcased the future of South African football, while celebrating community pride, young talent and unity.

For two decades, the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship, has become a cornerstone of local sports development, nurturing young talent and fostering community spirit.

In the under-13 category, Queenswood Boys claimed the boys’ title, and Donaldson Primary triumphed in the girls’ division, each earning R100 000 for their respective schools.

The Under-13 boys final was a showcase of skill. The teams fiercely contested the match, with the encounter requiring the dramatic spectacle of penalty shootouts to determine the victors.

The road to the championship national finals for under-19 was paved with obstacles, as Clapham High School emerged victorious, defeating Fumana High school 1-0. Clapham’s triumph earned them R150 000.

Clapham High School coach Chris Bergman says the team will be working to improve areas that need a thorough check before the championship finals starts.

Reflecting on the tournament’s talent, soccer scout, Sifiso Nxumalo, hailed the tournament saying it’s crucial in developing future stars and highlighting the importance of preparing the players for the rigours of professional soccer.

“We are able to see some of the best talent in the province. The tournament saves us time to go out individually looking for players,” added Nxumalo.

Following the resounding success of the Gauteng Provincial Football finals, bragging rights will be up for grabs when provincial teams meet at championship National football finals.
