Joburg Postpones Public Swimming Pool Opening to October

Residents of Johannesburg will have to wait another month before municipal swimming pools reopen, following a decision by the City to postpone the start of the 2026/27 swimming season.

The City of Johannesburg has moved the official opening date from 1 September to 1 October 2026, saying the additional time is needed to address health, safety, maintenance and operational requirements at its swimming facilities.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Councillor Thapelo Amad, has apologised to residents and regular pool users affected by the postponement.

According to Amad, the City understands the importance of public swimming pools, particularly during the warmer months, as they provide affordable recreational opportunities, encourage healthy lifestyles and offer safe spaces for children, young people and communities.

The reopening will take place in phases, with 36 municipal swimming pools expected to open in October. The City says the phased approach is necessary because facilities across its regions are in different conditions and require varying levels of maintenance and compliance work.

Amad says municipal teams will use the additional month to address outstanding issues and ensure that facilities meet the necessary standards before welcoming residents back.

The City is also considering extending the 2026/27 swimming season until April 2027, subject to weather conditions and operational requirements. If approved, the extension would give residents additional opportunities to use municipal pools and help offset the delayed start to the season.

The City has appealed to residents for patience and understanding while work continues to ensure that its swimming pools are safe, compliant and ready for public use.
