LeBron James and Coco Gauff have been honoured as the flagbearers for Team USA at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, set to take place this Friday. The decision, made by their fellow Olympians, highlights the significant achievements and influence of both athletes.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been selected as the male flagbearer for what will be his final Olympic appearance. As one of the most decorated and influential basketball players in history, James’s selection is a fitting tribute to his illustrious career. This honour marks a poignant moment for
James, who has represented the United States in multiple Olympic Games, winning gold medals in 2008, and 2012.
In contrast to James, 20-year-old tennis sensation Coco Gauff is embarking on her first Olympic journey. Recently named Team USA’s female flagbearer by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Gauff has rapidly ascended in the tennis world.
She captured her first singles Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open and added a doubles Grand Slam victory at the French Open earlier this year. Now ranked as world No. 2, Gauff continues to impress with her talent and poise on the global stage.
“I never thought in a million years I would have the honour of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff expressed in a statement.
“I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is—at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world,” she added.
Gauff’s admiration for basketball adds a special layer to this honor. As a super Miami Heat fan, she closely follows the team that LeBron James helped lead to two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013. Her favourite player, current Heat star Jimmy Butler, was a supportive presence during her US Open.
