Phili’s Extra-Time strike sends Stellenbosch past AmaZulu

Stellenbosch FC booked their place in the MTN8 semi-finals with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over AmaZulu at a lively DHL Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In the 5-goal thriller, AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane handed debuts to new signings Ryan Moon and Keegan Allen, while Steve Barker’s side stuck to their familiar formula, welcoming Lehlogonolo Mojela back to the matchday squad since last season’s MTN8 final.
Usuthu broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after a slick passing move around the Stellenbosch penalty area. Sandile Mthethwa picked out Allen, who took a neat first touch before rifling past Sage Stephens, marking his debut with a goal.
Stellenbosch responded just seven minutes later when Andre de Jong slipped in Devin Titus, who unselfishly squared for Sanele Barns to tap in from close range and level the score.
Moments later, AmaZulu suffered a setback when goalkeeper Richard Ofori had to be stretchered off after colliding with Barns, making way for Olwethu Mzimela. Barker’s men grew into the game, with De Jong pulling the strings, but the first half ended all square.
The hosts started the second half with attacking intent and could have taken the lead when Titus blazed over from just inside the area seven minutes after the restart.
Stellies finally got their reward in the 68th minute, with Barns curling home a superb free-kick from 20 yards to complete his brace. Their advantage would be short-lived, however, as Tebogo Mashigo equalised three minutes later with a deflected strike that looped over Stephens.
Both sides pushed for a winner in regulation time, with several substitutions made, but the contest headed into extra time.
The decisive moment arrived in the 117th minute when super sub Langelihle Phili found space on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot into the near corner, sparking celebrations for the home fans.
Stellenbosch held firm in the dying minutes to secure a thrilling 3-2 win and continue their cup run, while AmaZulu were left to rue missed opportunities and a debut spoiled by late heartbreak.
