JMPD Fuel Cards Unblocked as City Rules Out Service Disruptions

The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that all Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) fuel cards have been unblocked following engagements with the service provider, insisting that police operations were never disrupted and no vehicles were grounded.

The City said the matter arose during the transition between service providers, which required the alignment of contractual arrangements, administrative processes and payment mechanisms.

According to the City, engagements with the service provider addressed payment-related matters and compliance requirements linked to findings raised by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA).

An agreement was subsequently reached on the way forward, resulting in the unblocking of all fuel cards.

The City maintained that JMPD operations continued throughout the process, with the department proactively managing and optimising the use of available fuel to ensure that essential services were not affected.

It explained that transitions between service providers involve several processes, including the verification and transfer of account information, the alignment of contractual obligations, the activation of new service arrangements and the reconciliation of outstanding transactions.

The City said these processes require careful coordination to minimise operational risks, particularly where essential municipal services are involved.
It added that it remained committed to meeting its contractual obligations while complying with financial governance requirements.

The City also acknowledged the need to strengthen coordination during service provider transitions to reduce the risk of similar administrative challenges in future.

It reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted municipal operations, responsible management of public resources and accountability to Johannesburg residents.
