SAPS Urges Public to Remain Vigilant Against Drink Spiking Ahead of Festive Season
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged members of the public to remain vigilant against drink spiking as the festive season approaches, warning travelers to take precautions when attending year-end functions, parties and festivals.
With many people expected to attend social gatherings and entertainment events, police are encouraging the public to remain alert, protect their drinks and look out for one another to reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime.
In its festive season safety advisory, SAPS highlighted several measures people can take to protect themselves, including keeping their drinks within sight at all times and avoiding leaving them unattended, even for a short period.
Members of the public are also advised to order their own drinks and ensure they are prepared in front of them. Police further recommend declining drinks from strangers or individuals they do not trust.
Where available, revellers are encouraged to use drink covers or drink-spiking detection strips to add an extra layer of protection.
SAPS has also urged people attending events to stay with trusted friends, monitor one another’s safety and remain aware of their surroundings. Anyone who feels uncomfortable or notices suspicious behaviour should move to a safer location and alert venue staff or security personnel.
The police further recommend using drink-testing kits where available and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.
SAPS stressed the importance of taking personal safety seriously during the festive season, when increased social activity can create opportunities for criminals to target unsuspecting members of the public.
Anyone who becomes a victim of crime or finds themselves in a compromising situation is urged to contact their nearest police station for assistance.
Criminal activities can also be reported to the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111. Members of the public can alternatively submit anonymous tip-offs through the MySAPS App, which is available for download on smartphones.
Police are encouraging the public to remain alert, make responsible decisions and prioritise their safety and that of their friends throughout the festive season.
