Grade 3 learner killed in school wall collapse

A Grade 3 learner has died at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton after a wall collapsed during the school’s break time on Thursday.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, says preliminary reports show that a section of the school wall collapsed during break falling onto six learners and leaving them with severe injuries.

Among the six, one of the learners succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention in hospital.

Mabona added that the circumstances surrounding the collapse is currently under investigation.

He further indicated that the department has deployed psycho-social support teams to provide counselling and emotional support to affected learners, educators, and the bereaved family

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of such a young life,” said Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

“We will ensure that the necessary support is provided and that the circumstances surrounding this incident are determined,” he added.
