Johannesburg’s Smooth G20 Operations Showcase City’s Growing Capabilities, Says Mayor Morero

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the flawless execution of the G20 Summit’s opening day is proof that the city has the capacity, systems, and stability to consistently deliver reliable services—not only during high-profile global events but also for residents throughout the year.
Speaking to the media at Nasrec on Sunday, Morero described the first day of the summit as a landmark moment for the city. He said the event highlighted Johannesburg’s strengthened logistical abilities and reflected the continent’s expanding influence on the international stage.
“From where I’m sitting, the G20 was successful from a logistics point of view. Traffic management and the movement of Heads of State and delegates from their hotels to the main venue have all been very smooth,” Morero said.
Cleanup Efforts Continue Amid Public Criticism
Morero confirmed that cleanup operations across Johannesburg remain underway. The efforts come after criticism from some residents who accused the city of prioritising appearances for foreign dignitaries while long-standing service delivery issues persist in local communities.
He dismissed those claims, insisting that the recent improvements are part of broader plans set in motion earlier in the year. “When I took office, I committed to transforming the city. Part of that involved addressing management shortcomings that were holding teams back. It’s a management problem,” he said.
Visible Improvements Across All Regions
Over the past several weeks, all seven of Johannesburg’s regions have seen intensified maintenance efforts. Under the enhanced Mayoral High-Impact Service Delivery Programmes, workers resurfaced roads, cleaned public spaces, repaired intersections, and tackled service backlogs that had lingered for months.
The rapid turnaround has prompted many residents to question why such standards of cleanliness and infrastructure maintenance cannot be sustained year-round.
No Special Budget for G20, Mayor Says
Morero rejected suggestions that the upgrades were merely cosmetic or funded specifically for the summit. He said the work was carried out using the city’s existing budget.
“In June, we passed a fully funded budget for all seven regions, including the area hosting the Summit. We didn’t have to top up anything for G20; we simply implemented what had already been planned,” he said.
More improvements are expected this week.
The mayor assured the public that service delivery efforts will continue. He said additional improvements across the city are expected to resume on Tuesday, following the conclusion of major G20 activities.
