Kaizer Chiefs eliminated from Carling knockout Cup
A relentless penalty shootout performance paid off for Stellenbosch on Saturday, yet proved in vain for Kaizer Chiefs as they tumbled out of the Carling knockout Cup with a 5-4 score from the spot.
In an absorbing affair packed with unpredictable moments, including a shocking, red card offence, ultimately it was the more familiar conclusion of Stellenbosch’s mental strength excelling in a penalty shootout that led to the elimination of a Chiefs side who had missed so many chances.
Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stevens put in a heroic performance, making several saves throughout the match and stopping two penalty in the shoot-out.
While Andre De Jong missed Stellenbosch’s initial penalty, two missed attempts by Tashreeq Morris and Dillan Solomons saw Chiefs bow out of the competition in Cape Town.
Following a lengthy delay at the DHL Stadium, the game commenced at a frantic pace with the possession count shared equally during the first 10 minutes.
With the score goalless after 120 minutes of play – 90 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of extra-time – the match had to be decided by penalty kicks.
It was an agonizing way for France to go out after a tense encounter watched by a decent crowd.
