MMC for Road and Transport management missing following flooding incident in Mozambique
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has confirmed that MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, is missing after being swept away by floods in Mozambique.
In a media statement, the city says Mngwevu had travelled to the Chokwè area, though It remains unclear exactly where he went missing, but a search and rescue operation is under way.
Mozambique has been experiencing torrential rains, which have resulted in widespread flooding.
The city added that the vehicle Mngwevu was travelling in was washed away by floodwaters, although the exact location of the incident has not yet been confirmed.
South African rescue operators have travelled to Mozambique and are in contact with one of the five people who were travelling in the same vehicle as the MMC.
Mngwevu’s wife also travelled to Mozambique on Tuesday evening.
The city has respectfully appealed to the public and the media to afford the Mngwevu family privacy and space, and refrain from speculation. national government has been roped in to assist with the search efforts.
