Thabo Motlhabi
Greater Mohlakeng Hostel came alive with vibrant colours, sounds, and cultural pride as residents gathered to celebrate Heritage Day in grand style. The annual celebration was hosted at the Mohlakeng open space in partnership with the hostel committee and members of various hostel communities.
In the true spirit of African unity, the event brought together people from different ethnic backgrounds—particularly hostel dwellers—to celebrate their heritage as one united community. The initiative, deeply rooted in the principles of Ubuntu and national reconciliation, aimed to promote peace, unity, and social cohesion among hostel residents.

Promoting Unity Through Culture
Speaking at the event, the Induna (Traditional Leader) of Greater Mohlakeng Hostel, Mr. Manoafedile Emmanuel Wesi, said: “As Africans, we must celebrate our heritage in diversity, for the sake of our children and their future.”
The celebration is part of an ongoing campaign to address and overcome the legacy of historical injustices, including tribalism and black-on-black violence that still affect many communities. The goal is to build bridges across tribal lines and foster a collective identity rooted in mutual respect and cultural pride.
Cultural Showcase and Entertainment
The campaign featured a rich program of traditional music, dance, and performances from various cultural groups. Attendees were treated to lively entertainment as different groups took to the stage, showcasing their unique songs, dance, food, and traditional attire—a vibrant representation of South Africa’s “Rainbow Nation.” Children also played a central role in the festivities. The event served as an educational experience, helping the younger generation learn about their roots, heritage, and the significance of preserving their cultural identity.

A Celebration of Unity and Togetherness
This annual Heritage Day celebration stands as a symbol of unity, peace, and togetherness within the hostel dwellers. It continues to grow in significance, fostering an environment where cultural expression is embraced and historical divisions are healed.
As the Secretary of Greater Mohlakeng Hostel, Mr. Emilton Morupa, said: “This reflects the importance of celebrating this day in remembering different cultures, customs, and traditions as a society, fostering social cohesion, in unity in celebrating diversity.”
The event is a reminder that even in spaces once marked by divisions, the spirit of Ubuntu can thrive—bringing people together to celebrate and forge a united future.
