New School of Art Inspires Young Creatives in the West Rand
Thabo Motlhabi
“West Rand’s future shines through art.” The spirit of creativity came alive this past Saturday as the West Rand School of Art officially opened its doors at the Memorial Recreation Centre, drawing a vibrant crowd of young, inspiring artists and community members.
Stakeholders that made the event possible were:
Net-nine-nine
Black Afropop Artists
Backyard Art Gallery
Founded by the local art visionary Mr. Kgosi Khumalo, the initiative aimed to uplift and empower young creatives across the West Rand townships. The launch event, held on Saturday, 04 April 2026, marked a powerful step towards building a new generation of artists who can express themselves and navigate life through creativity.
“The school is about investing in young people,” said Mr Khumalo. “We want to nurture young talents, build confidence, and help children use art as a tool to understand and shape their world.”
The programme focuses on children from the primary school level, encouraging them to explore the imagination, develop skills, and view challenges through an artistic lens. The message of the day was clear: art is limitless – it evolves, heals, and transforms lives.
The venue was fully packed with energetic young minds, eager to learn and express themselves. From painting, poetry, music, and dance, the event showcased the many forms art can take in everyday life.
As a board member, Mrs Thokozile Makhathini also shared words of encouragement:
“Believe in your talents and skills, and never give up. Art can open doors and truly change your life.”
The launch ended on a higher note, with lively performances by Ublack Afro Pop artist creatives and displays that celebrated the richness of local talent.
As the West Rand School of Art begins its journey, one thing is certain – Kagiso creatives’ future is brighter than ever.

What a day!
Unfortunately I missed this event after having planned for its attendance with entire family and having appointed myself as its local publicist due to unreversable circumstances.
Fortunately. I followed up every step around this magnificent launch. A right step in the best direction for our youth, our future and our region as the West Rand of Gauteng.A much needed facility, vehicle and vision. Thanks to all the team members (Founders, organisers, sponsors and attendants).

I fortunately attended the event with my nieces and they were so happy to be part of a creative, well organized environment for children.Every child has a story to tell thus art offers a calming environment for therapeutic expression of feelings and emotions. Thank you Team and all the best in this journey of expression
