Ride Joburg finds a new home at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit

Johannesburg is gearing up for another major sporting spectacle as the 29th edition of Ride Joburg takes place on Sunday, 22 November 2026, introducing a historic venue change that promises a spectacular new finish to one of South Africa’s premier cycling events.

For the first time, riders will start and finish at the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand, bringing a fresh dimension to the race while showcasing Johannesburg’s capacity to host major sporting events. The 947 Ride Joburg is the second-largest timed cycle race after the Tour de France, attracting thousands of cyclists across the globe.

New Race Director JP Nortje, who takes over from Fritz Pienaar, says he intends to build on the strong foundation established by his predecessor while making the event more accessible and inclusive.

“Fritz has always set a standard for what it means to lead with purpose and react calmly to the ever-changing landscape of eventing. As I step into this role, I want to continue that legacy but also make Ride Joburg even more accessible and inclusive, so more people can experience the magic of riding through our city. It is a huge privilege, and I’m ready to give it everything,” says Nortje.

The 97-kilometre flagship race will take cyclists along some of Johannesburg’s most recognisable roads and landmarks, including the M1 Highway and Nelson Mandela Bridge, before heading north towards the finish at Kyalami. In the final stages, riders will complete a 4.5-kilometre clockwise lap of the FIA Grade 2 motorsport circuit before crossing the finish line.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, says the move reinforces the City’s ambition to position Johannesburg as a leading destination for sport, tourism, business and investment.

“Ride Joburg is much more than a cycling race; it is an opportunity for Johannesburg to showcase its world-class facilities, infrastructure and the energy of our people. The move to Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit gives riders and spectators a completely new experience while allowing us to highlight one of the city’s most iconic sporting facilities,” says Mayor Morero.

The circuit is expected to enhance the race-day atmosphere by offering grandstand viewing opportunities and a contained environment for spectators to experience the excitement of the finish.

As the City prepares to welcome thousands of participants and supporters on 22 November, the new venue signals an exciting chapter in the event’s history.
