Saving with Purpose: Why Stokvels Are Strengthening Communities Beyond Mandela Day

July presents an opportunity to reflect on two values that have long shaped South African communities, the importance of saving for the future during National Savings Month and the spirit of service celebrated on Mandela Day. Few community institutions bring these values together as naturally as stokvels.

For generations, stokvels have enabled South Africans to pool resources, achieve common financial goals and support one another through life’s milestones and unexpected challenges. Today, they remain one of the country’s most effective forms of community-based saving.

South Africa is home to an estimated 800 000 stokvels, with members collectively saving around R50 billion each year. While these groups are often associated with grocery savings, many also help members fund education, prepare for emergencies, support small businesses and reduce dependence on credit.

“Stokvels continue to demonstrate that financial resilience isn’t built overnight,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications and Sponsorship Manager at The SPAR Group South Africa. “They encourage consistent saving, accountability and collective decision-making, qualities that have helped generations of South Africans navigate both opportunity and adversity.”

Beyond their financial contribution, stokvels have become an important source of social support. Many groups contribute to community projects, assist families during times of need and provide a network of encouragement that extends well beyond monthly contributions.

It is this spirit of shared responsibility that resonates strongly during Mandela Day. While South Africans dedicate 67 minutes to serving their communities, stokvels demonstrate how small, collective actions can create lasting impact throughout the year.

As household budgets continue to come under pressure, financial education has become just as important as access to affordable products. Understanding how to budget effectively, maximise purchasing power and save consistently can help households build greater financial confidence over time.

Recognising this need, SPAR has partnered with Stokvel Talk to help bring these conversations directly into communities. The partnership creates opportunities for stokvel members to engage with practical financial insights, exchange experiences and learn strategies that support smarter saving and informed spending.

This Saturday, the partnership heads to Braamfischer, where local stokvel members will gather for another Stokvel Talk session focused on financial wellbeing, budgeting and making the most of collective buying. The event forms part of an ongoing programme that empowers communities through knowledge-sharing while celebrating the role stokvels continue to play in South African society.

“Stokvels have always been about people helping people,” says Maubane. “Our partnership with Stokvel Talk reflects SPAR’s commitment to supporting communities beyond the supermarket by creating spaces where people can learn from one another, share practical advice and strengthen the financial wellbeing of their households.”

National Savings Month reminds us that every financial journey begins with a commitment to save. Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change starts when communities work together. Together, these observances shine a light on the enduring value of stokvels that bring people together not only to build financial security, but to strengthen the communities they call home.
