WAR ON LEAKS LEADS TO INSTALLATION OF 2 175 WATER METERS AND REDUCTION OF WATERLOSSES
The City of Ekurhuleni took the War On Leaks programme to Alliance in Benoni on Tuesday, 09 September. Leaks were identified and promptly repaired to ensure every drop counts, and
water losses are minimised.
Poorly functioning or non-existent water meters is one of the key factors contributing to non-revenue water (NRW), along with illegal connections, billing and revenue collection. The programme was led by MMC for Water and Sanitation, Cllr Thembi Msane, and spoke of the city’s commitment to sustainable water management and conservation initiatives.
Some of the key achievements by the city in reducing water losses and conserving water include the
installation of 2 175 water meters between January and June 2025. These meters are now integrated
into the billing system, enabling revenue generation from water usage. Additionally, the city has
successfully reduced non-revenue water from 29.84% in June 2024 to 28.94% in 2025 which is below
the international average of 30% non-revenue water.
Normal non-revenue water may be caused by flushing of the water supply system or firefighting, among other factors. At Alliance, MMC for Water and Sanitation Cllr Msane and city officials observed that some residents have attempted to repair damaged water meters, often using unsuitable materials that can cause further leaks.
While they can be proactive, residents are strongly encouraged to avoid self-repairs and instead report
leaks or damages at the dedicated hotline: 086 0543 000.
