WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS IN BEDFORDVIEW

The City of Ekurhuleni is working around the clock to stabilise water supply in parts of Bedfordview, particularly in the high-lying areas and streets, which have been experiencing inconsistent supply in recent weeks.

Repairs on the Signal Hill Reservoir, which is at the centre of the current situation, is progressing well, and it should be completed soon, meaning that water supply in the area is on the verge of normalisation. The reservoir was decommissioned when the city discovered that unstable water supply experienced in parts of Bedfordview was due to its leaks.

To mitigate the situation while attending to the current water supply challenge, the city resorted to supplying water to affected residents through a temporary bypass of the reservoir from the bulk supplier’s meter directly to the customers. However, this intervention also becomes strained due to high demand during the day due to lack of additional storage at the Signal Hill Reservoir thus negatively impacting high lying areas.

The affected areas include:

  • Townsend;
  • Kloof;
  • Protea;
  • Ceder;
  • Reily; and
  • Parts of Van Buuren Road.

In the meantime, the city has deployed two stationary tankers and one roving tanker to assist with water shortages experienced during the day.

Residents in surrounding areas are encouraged to use water sparingly to allow the water network in the affected areas to recover.

The city wishes to inform affected residents that regular updates on the situation will be communicated through the city’s digital communication platforms as the work progresses.
