A wave of blue, colourful placards and community spirit filled the streets of Westonaria as SID Itumeleng Special School hosted a successful Autism Awareness Fun Walk, held at school premises on Friday, 22 May 2026.
In the early hours of Friday morning, community members of Westonaria, educators, parents, and various organisations gathered for a powerful and informative fun walk for autistic children at SID Itumeleng Special School.
The event, led by educators, principal and departmental head Mrs Mercy Daiby Matjuwadi, brought together parents, learners, educators, community members, and various organisations in a powerful show of support for autistic children and their families.
Among the stakeholders that partnered with the school, all of whom joined hands to promote autism awareness, acceptance, and inclusion:
*GoldField South Deep
*COGTA
*Engen Johnny’s Westonaria
*JJJ
*Diale Funeral Parlour
*SAPS Westonaria
*Rand West City Local Municipality
*Standard Bank
*Nedbank
*Nomfundo Zondo Foundation
ORLANDO Pirates Westonaria Branch
*Autism South Africa
The walk aimed to educate the public about autism while encouraging greater understanding and compassion within the community. The event also served as a fundraising initiative with proceeds contributing towards the school’s programme and operations needs. Participants marched proudly through the area carrying placards bearing messages of hope, equality, and inclusion. The strong turnout reflected the community’s commitment to advocating for the rights, dignity, and well-being of autistic children.

Addressing the attendees after the walk, SID Itumeleng Special School Principal Miss Suzanne Mayde Motlhabane thanked parents and stakeholders for their continued support:
“To all parents of children with autism, your love, patience, and support make a world of difference. Celebrate every milestone, and remember that every child grows at their own pace. To our community, awareness leads to understanding, and understanding leads to acceptance. Together, let’s create an inclusive world where every autistic individual is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive.”
The campaign also highlighted the daily challenges many autistic children face, including communication barriers, social interaction difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and adapting to changes in routine. Organisers stressed that with the right support, understanding, and opportunities, autistic kids could flourish and contribute meaningfully to society.
Mrs Nontombi Zondo, founder of the Nomfundo Zondo Foundation, praised the initiative and emphasised the importance of community involvement:
“Events like this build understanding.” The Nomfundo Zondo Foundation joined as a stakeholder today and supported SID Itumeleng Special School as one of our beneficiaries. When community members walked and engaged with our learners, awareness grows, and inclusion follows.”
The day ended on a high note as learners, parents, educators, community members, and stakeholders gathered at the school’s hall for activities and celebration. Laughter, music, and support of togetherness marked the successful conclusion of an event that not only raised awareness but strengthened community bonds.
The Autism Awareness Fun Walk served as a reminder that acceptance begins with understanding and that every step taken together helps build a more inclusive future for all.
