Building More than Wood: The Boys to Men Initiative Gives Boys Tools to Become Men

The sound of saws, laughter and words of encouragement echoed through Benson Sawmills on Saturday, 25 July 2026, as boys aged 5 to 20 years took part in the Boys to Men Basic Woodworking Workshop, an Initiative dedicated to building not only practical skills, but also character, confidence and hope.
Hosted by Miss Desiree Liebenberg, the workshop was established in response to one of South Africa’s pressing social challenges: the growing number of boys who are being raised without active fathers or positive male role models. Recognising the importance of guidance and mentorship, the Boys to Men Initiative creates an opportunity for boys to learn, grow and connect with men who are committed to making a positive difference in their lives.
Although the workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of woodworking, its purpose extended far beyond timber and tools. Through hands-on activities and meaningful interactions with mentors, the boys learned valuable life lessons, discipline, perseverance, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving, while building confidence in their abilities.
Speaking during the event, Miss Desiree Liebenberg shared the heartfelt message behind the initiative:
“Boys to Men” was founded on the belief that every boy deserves guidance, encouragement and the opportunity to reach his full potential. We are committed to investing in the next generation of equipping boys with practical skills, strong values and the confidence to become responsible men who make a positive difference in their families and communities”.
Throughout the day, participants worked alongside experienced male coaches who guided them in the safe use of woodworking machinery and techniques. Under careful supervision, each participant designed and built a decorative wooden table, an accomplishment that filled the boys with pride as they saw their ideas take shape.
For many, the workshop was about discovering abilities they never knew they had. It also provided an opportunity to build healthy relationships with positive male role models in safe and encouraging environments.
Participants, including Nathan Van Wyk, said the experience was both educational and enjoyable:
“I really enjoyed the workshop. I learned about different types of wood and how to use the woodworking machinery. It was exciting to make my own decorative wooden table. I also made a new friend; the food was delicious, and I can’t wait for the next Boys to Men workshop.”
Miss Liebenberg expressed her sincere appreciation to Bensaw Sawmills, the volunteer coaches, parents, and community members whose support helped make the workshop a success.
As the Boys to Men Initiative continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to equip boys with practical skills, strengthen their character and provide the mentorship they need to become responsible, confident and purpose-driven men.
The workshop provides that sometimes, the most important things being built are not made from wood, but from encouragement, guidance and the belief that every boy deserves the opportunity to succeed.
