Kota Festival Returns to Newtown with Bold Flavours and Township Pride

The much-loved annual Jozi Kota Festival is back, bringing with it a vibrant celebration of one of South Africa’s most iconic street foods. Scheduled to take place on April,25 in Newtown Johannesburg, the festival is expected to draw thousands of food enthusiasts eager to indulge in a wide variety of local and national dishes.

A “kota” — a hollowed-out quarter loaf of bread filled with ingredients like chips, polony, cheese, eggs, and sauces — has long been a staple in township cuisine. This year’s festival takes that tradition to the next level, with vendors showcasing both classic combinations and creative new twists on the beloved dish.

A key pillar of this year’s economic impact is the continued partnership with Albany; a proudly South African bakery brand committed to supporting township food entrepreneurs.

Through this collaboration, Albany works closely with Kota vendors across the tour, providing structured support, brand alignment opportunities and a platform that elevates their businesses to new markets.

Visitors can expect a wide variety of stalls serving everything from traditional kotas to gourmet versions packed with premium meats, spicy sauces, and unexpected fillings. Food competitions will also be a highlight, as vendors go head-to-head to claim the title of best kota.

The Best Kota Vendor across the tour stands a chance to win their share of R110,000. This competition not only raises standards of quality and innovation but injects meaningful capital into small businesses, enabling winners to reinvest, expand operations and potentially create additional employment within their communities.

COO and Co-Founder Mr. Luvo Limba reflects on this year’s edition: “This is where the Kota Festival story began. But today, our impact goes far beyond celebration. Each festival represents real jobs; real businesses being supported and real money flowing back into communities. Through partnerships like Albany and now Nyama Choma, we are building something sustainable — not just events, but opportunities.”

Beyond the food, the festival will feature live entertainment from local DJs and performers, creating an energetic atmosphere throughout the day. It’s not just about eating—it’s about celebrating township innovation, entrepreneurship, and community pride.

Small business owners are especially excited about the festival’s return, seeing it as a platform to grow their brands and connect with new customers. For many vendors, the kota is more than just a meal—it’s a symbol of hustle, creativity, and identity.

Family-friendly activities and cultural showcases will ensure that people of all ages can enjoy the experience, making it a perfect outing for friends and families alike.

As the Jozi Kota Festival makes its comeback, it offers more than just great food—it’s a powerful reminder of how local culture and cuisine continue to bring people together in meaningful ways.

Tickets are available at Computicket outlets nationwide and online. Early booking is encouraged as high attendance is anticipated.
