Minister Kubayi condemns the killing of a lawyer in Johannesburg CBD.

The minister of justice and constitutional development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has expressed her shock at the killing of a lawyer in the Johannesburg CBD and strongly condemns this act of violence.

The victim, Chinette Gallichan, a 35-year-old attorney from Krugersdorp, was shot dead on Monday outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) office at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in Johannesburg’s CBD.

It’s alleged that Chinette was assassinated; she was involved in a labour dispute concerning workers who had allegedly been retrenched and were seeking compensation. The deceased was a legal practitioner attached to Sibanye-Stillwater’s legal team.

Minister Kubayi emphasised that violence can never be accepted as a means of resolving disputes and reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law.

The South African Police Services have launched an investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
