A major boost has been given to grades 12 learners of Mandisa Shiceka School Specialisation in maths, science and science and technology. The event took place at the School Hall on Thursday, 10 September 2026.

The donations handed over were expected to make a significant difference in the learners’ understanding of mathematics and science stories, particularly for those who previously struggled to access scientific calculators.

For learners, the calculators meant less time spent struggling with calculators and more time focusing on understanding their schoolwork. They will also be able to practise at home, giving them an opportunity to prepare more effectively after their exams.

The donations came after maths and science teacher Mr Phoenix Moteke wrote to Mobil Company seeking assistance for his struggling learners. His initiative has now yielded results, as every grade 12 learner is now set to benefit from access to a scientific calculator.

Speaking about the importance of education, Mr Phoenix Moteke encouraged learners not to give up on their studies:

“Education is still the key to success, and that will not change. And I know most learners feel like giving up, and I encouraged everyone to focus and continue working hard. We break away from poverty through education, so that is the only solution, and we still believe in that. I’m happy that Mobil Company responded back positively, as most companies operate from profit motives, but Mobil Company showed character that they do care for the Black child education in townships.”

The school hopes the donations will continue towards improved academic performance and help learners achieve its ambitious targets of a 100% year mark.

The scientific calculators will allow learners to practise more frequently and build confidence in maths and science subjects that often present significant challenges for grade 12 learners.

At the handover ceremony, a Mobil Company representative officially handed over the 1000 scientific calculators to Mr Moteke on behalf of the school.

The smiles from learners and educators captured the significance of the occasion as the community celebrated the donations that could make a lasting difference in the academic journey of its learners.
