The Mogale City department of Social Development Social Workers fraternity, in partnership with Mogale City Local Municipality and the End Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Collective, successfully hosted an awareness march against GVBF on Friday, November 07, 2025.

The march began at Thandabanthu Pharmacy and concluded at Kagiso Magistrate Court. Under the theme “Equality for all”, it highlighted the urgent need to end violence against women and children within the communities.

Across South Africa, news headlines continue to report tragic cases where intimate partners murder their loved ones – most of the perpetrators being men. These devastating acts have shaken communities, including Kagiso, where rising gender-based violence cases have prompted actions.

The aim of the march was to raise awareness about gender-based violence and femicide in Kagiso and Mogale City at large. The event aimed to unite community members, organisations, and government departments in taking a stand against all forms of abuse and violence.

As a social worker from Mogale City Local Municipality, Mr Sibusiso Baloyi said, “I encouraged people to break the silence and speak about the abuse that they experience or witness because silence protects the abuser/perpetrator, but speaking out empowers the survivor to break free from abuse and helps build a safe and more just society for all. So let’s break the silence and speak up.”

Various organisations supporting the fight against gender-based violence and femicide joined forces to make their voices heard, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to ending the scourge of violence against women and children. The march also drew attention from Kagiso residents, many of whom expressed support and hope for lasting change.

Participants marched on the Kagiso streets in solidarity, displaying placards and chanting messages of justice and equality. Upon reaching the Kagiso Magistrate Court, a signed memorandum outlining community concerns and proposed actions was formally submitted to the court authorities.
