Running for a Reason: Autism Awareness Takes the Lead!
Thabo Motlhabi
East Beachfront came alive with purpose, passion, and community spirit on Saturday, 04 April 2026, as residents gathered for a heartfelt 5 km autism awareness fun walk.
Organized by dedicated autism advocates Miss Yolanda Nazo, the walk aimed to raise funds for the participation in the upcoming Sanlam Marathon in Cape Town this May on the 25th, 2026, while also shining a light on autism awareness during autism awareness month.
More than a Walk – A Movement of Love and Unity
April is globally recognised as Autism Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the autism community and educate society. The fun walk went beyond fundraising; it was a powerful reminder that individuals on the autism spectrum are valued members of society who deserve equal respect, love, and opportunity.
Miss Nazo organised the walk in honour of her son, a 17-year-old nonverbal autistic son, forming her personal journey into a source of inspiration for many.
A Mother’s Strength, A Community’s Support
In her own words, Miss Nazo shared:
“This run forms part of my journey to participate in the Sanlam Marathon in Cape Town on the 25th of May 2026, where I will be running for a charity focused on autism research.” As
A mother to a 17-year-old nonverbal autistic son, this cause is deeply personal. Being a single parent has its challenges, and running has become a powerful form of healing and strength for me over the past years. When I started running, it was simply a way of losing weight, but over time it became something much deeper. It helped me cope, heal, and find balance through the challenges I face daily. I never imagined that it would lead me here, preparing for my second marathon while raising funds for a cause so close to my heart.”
Rain Couldn’t Stop the Spirit of United Community
Despite windy and rainy weather, community members showed up in numbers, proving their commitments and support; smiles, laughter, and determination carried participants from the start to finish.
Participants Mrs Neziswa Peter reflected on the day:
“This was such a beautiful act of love, from a mother to her son, and from the community to her. People were excited to contribute, and the energy was incredible. “She’s already a champion.”
A Goal Achieved, A Message Amplified
The fundraising goal was successfully met, with generous contributors from attendees; the walk ended on a high note, celebrating not just funds raised but also the awareness created and the unity strengthened.
