SANTACO GAUTENG CLARIFIES TAXI OPERATIONS: NO PROVINCE-WIDE SHUTDOWN
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Gauteng wishes to assure the public that taxi operations across the province will continue as normal except for the Ekurhuleni Region, where discussions remain ongoing.
This comes after taxis in Ekurhuleni stopped operating on Thursday, August 28, 2025, which left people stranded and without transport. Taxi drivers in Ekurhuleni have shown dissatisfaction with the government impounding their taxis.
The head of department for Gauteng Roads and Transport, Dr Thulani Mdadane, says, “The cars impounded by the department have nothing to do with licensing; however, we found cars are not roadworthy, and we found the cars were without licences.”
We are disappointed; at one point you speak with the leaders, and then there are people on the ground who send different information. Said Dr Thulani
In a statement released on Thursday, SANTACO wished to make it clear that there will be no province-wide protest or suspension of services in Gauteng.
