8th annual Soweto Kota Festival returns to Dobsonville
Soweto is gearing up for the return of its annual Soweto Kota Festival. Taking place on September 6 and 7 at Rugby ground next to Dobsonville stadium, this much-anticipated event continues to celebrate South Africa’s rich and diverse street food culture, shining a spotlight on the Kota—a proudly South African culinary icon rooted in township life. With each passing year, the festival grows in flavour and flair, and the 2025 edition promises to be the biggest and boldest yet.
Festival founder Sidwell Ntshingilane confirmed that after relocating to the fun Valley last year, the festival returns to the heart of Soweto.
“We listened to the people and brought the event back to Soweto,” adding that they’re not anticipating any issues this year because the event has been moved to a bigger venue.”
“The Soweto Kota Festival is more than just a food event—it’s a celebration of township creativity, unity, and local enterprise. This year, we’re bringing even more excitement for families, music lovers, foodies, and culture seekers,” added Tshingilane.
Blue Ribbon also returns as the festival’s headline sponsor, reinforcing it’s commitment to supporting township based initiatives.
Live music will be performed on the main stage throughout the weekend, with entertainment lineup featuring some of Mzansi’s top performers, such as zee Nxumalo, DJ Young, Mlindo the vocalist, Rethabile Khumalo and Naledi Aphiwe.
Tickets are available at Computicket, Webtickets, and selected retail outlets.
