Basic Education: Investigating Leaked Matric Results

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says, “Its systems may have been breached, and the department will investigate the alleged leaking of matric results in 2024.”

This comes after anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee alleged that he received several calls from individuals claiming that a website sells National Senior Certificate exam results for R100.

Minister Siviwe says that “there are two processes that we need to follow: one, we need to determine if the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is our system secure and airtight enough. Once we compile our results, we have to share results with certain stakeholders so that they can start getting ready with their processes.”

She adds that there’s a possibility that they may have been breached in that process, and if the breach is coming from the DBE side, we are going to launch an investigation, and consequence management will follow. It’s critical that this process is as airtight as possible.

The reason that this matter wasn’t announced within 48 hours is because the Hawks have indicated that the investigation is at the advanced stage.
