Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has revealed the club’s ambitious plans for the new season, after beefing up the squad with 11 new players so far.
The Cape club delved deep into the market ahead of the 2024/25 PSL season, merging youth and experience with Haashim Domingo, Fortune Makaringe, Kamohelo Mokotjo, and Namibian Wonderkid Prins Tjiueza and Carlinhos are among the new faces; however, the latter is out for 7-9 months after sustaining an injury, with these signings, Comitis believes the club is now ready to compete for major honours. emphasising the importance of having competition for each position following a 5th place finish in the league last season.
“We had a bad run last season—11 games without a win. It’s not always the coach; sometimes it’s the players not having enough competition in order for them to step up.” Comitis said on Sports Nights Amplified with Andile.
“We have brought in some interesting players into the mix, so the future is bright. Eric and I have a clear plan for what we want to achieve this season; we want to compete for everything.”
He continued: “Positions four or five are not good anymore; we want silverware. Hopefully this year will be the year where we win things.”
Comitis went on to send a stern warning to rivals, drawing inspiration from their 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, who were on course to finish the league season invincible, as he expresses immense support for head coach Eric Tinkler to succeed.
“Given the right players with flare, I think the club can still surprise a lot of people. I would like to see Eric [Tinkler] is here for years to come; he is part of the club’s DNA,” stated Comitis. “When you beat Sundowns when they are a game away from an invincible season, people look at the team [City] and say, ‘Hold on, don’t write this club off,’” he added.
The Citizens booked an MTN8 semi-final spot against defending champions the Orlando Pirates after securing a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the quarterfinals, and will kickstart their league campaign with a trip to Royal AM on September 14.
