Former Sundowns star linked with Wydad

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has been linked with a move to Morocco giants Wydad Casablanca coached by South African mentor Rhulani Mokwena.

The 32-year-old tenacious midfielder was released by the reigning Betway Premiership champions at the end of last season, which marked the end of his second stint at the Chloorkop-based side, after winning the league title and the inaugural Africa Football League [AFL].

Zungu was part of the mass exodus that followed the exit of Mokwena, who is understood to have amicably parted ways with the club after an alleged internal rift with sporting director Flemming Berg.

The former Bafana international was deemed surplus to requirements at Sundowns, a decision attributed to the departure of Mokwena, who is believed to be the one who authorised his signing, including Thembinkosi Lorch.

Now, reports have emerged in Morocco that Zungu has landed in Casablanca to train with the 22- time Moroccan top-flight winners, who are desperate for a turnaround following a disappointing 6th- place finish in the league last season.

However, nothing has been finalised between two parties, with Zungu still being assessed by his former coach and the technical team, despite the player being unattached to any club and instantly available to sign on the dotted line.

Interestingly, this is the second time the former Glasgow Rangers anchorman has been linked with the Moroccan powerhouse since Mokwena took over the hot seat. Zungu will join Downs Academy graduate Cassius Mailula if the deal materialises.

Meanwhile, Wydad are currently in 6th-place in the Botola Pro League standings, with eight points, one behind joint-leaders IR Tangers, Union Touraga Sportif, and defending champions, city rivals Raja Club Athletic respectively after five matches played.

It remains to be seen whether Zungu will be reunited with the 37-year-old tactician, who has entrusted with restoring the glory days on the red side of Casablanca and returning the sleeping giant to continental football.
