The highly anticipated Betway SA20 Season 3 is set to ignite the South African summer once again, showcasing a thrilling combination of world-class cricket and entertainment. The tournament, which features both local and international stars, kicks off on 9 January 2024, with the final scheduled for 8 February at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The Paarl Royals, who had a challenging run in the previous season, are looking to bounce back stronger this year. With a formidable squad led by Captain David Miller and star players like Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo, they are determined to make their mark in the competition.
Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is expected to spearhead the Paarl Royals bowling attack and has set ambitious personal goals for the upcoming season. Speaking at the Betway SA20 Season 3 Launch held at the Wanderers Stadium on Monday, Ngidi reflected on his performance from last season and expressed his desire to replicate his success.
“Last year, I think Liz and I were chasing the top wicket-taker spot for quite a while. Obviously, getting knocked out meant I couldn’t compete in that race anymore, so that was that. So hopefully, if we go further in the tournament, I’m able to, you know, probably take the most wickets. I had a good season last season, so I’m looking to emulate the same in season 3,” he said.
When asked about his tactical approach for the season, Ngidi emphasised his familiarity with South African grounds, which he believes is key to his success. Additionally, he spoke about the exciting addition of Kwena Maphaka, a rising star in the cricket world, to the Royals squad.
“I’m familiar with all the grounds around the country; I’ve played at all of them, and I think that’s the secret to my success—understanding where I’m playing every time and what’s required. So, I’m not looking to change that. Now that I have Kwena as well, hopefully someone is hunting with me and putting the team in a better position,” Ngidi added.
Kwena Maphaka, at just 17 years old, has already made a name for himself on the international cricket stage. He was part of the SA U19 team that competed in the Caribbean last year alongside stars like Dewald Brevis from MI Cape Town. Maphaka’s meteoric rise saw him catapulted into the South African ‘A’ senior side for the recent winter tour to Sri Lanka.
The young pacer’s talent did not go unnoticed as he was signed by the Mumbai Indians for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), replacing Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka, who was sidelined by injury. Maphakas inclusion in the Paarl Royals squad alongside seasoned players like Ngidi brings added depth to their bowling attack.
With a combination of experience and youthful talent, the Paarl Royals are gearing up for an exciting campaign in Betway SA20 Season 3. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if Ngidi and his team can turn their fortunes around and make a deep run in the tournament.
