Nominate your local sporting heroes for Gauteng Sports Awards

The Gauteng Sport Awards are given annually in recognition of the achievements of Gauteng’s dedicated sportspeople and are open to anybody who lives in Gauteng. Under the theme “Enabling Excellence, Inspiring the Youth,”, the awards were officially launched at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, recently.

Recognizing and celebrating those who made an outstanding contribution to Gauteng sport across all levels during the 2023 calendar year, the Gauteng Sport Awards is the night of nights for the Gauteng sporting community.

Each year, the event presents the stories of the incredible individuals and organizations whose outstanding work is helping Gauteng become a more active city.

The 12th annual event saw the department detail the nomination process and the categories for the awards.

The adjudication panel will then select three finalists in selected categories and decide on the winner. For the category Sports Personality of the Year, the panel will select three to four finalists, and the public will vote for the winner.

For the Lifetime Achievement Award(s), the winner(s) will be chosen by MEC Morakane Mosupyoe. All processes will be monitored by a team of independent auditors.

The awards will feature 20 categories, including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Sportsman of the Year, Disabled Sportswoman of the Year, Most Promising Athlete of the Year, Amayanga-Yanga Player of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year, and Fan of the Year. A new category included is the Sports Photographer of the Year.

MEC Morakane Mosupyoe stated that through the awards, the department hopes to inspire talented young people across the province to develop into competitive sportsmen and women.

“Gauteng is the largest contributor of sports stars and heroes in South Africa and is a breeding ground for raw talent, which, when identified and nurtured, can explode into record-breaking levels,” added MEC Masupyoe.

Nominations are now open for this year’s prestigious Gauteng Sports Awards. Nominations will close on August 4th, with the glittering gala event to announce the winners of the Gauteng Sports Awards slated to take place in November.
