Gauteng emergency services have called a halt to an operation to search and rescue illegal miners trapped at a disused Rand Lease shaft in Roodepoort.
Monday morning’s rescue mission has been slow and yielded no results. There are just as many illegal miners underground on Monday as there were on Sunday.
The Emergency Medical Services have put their efforts on hold as the oxygen deficiency takes its toll on the rescue.
MMC for Public Safety Dr Mgcini Tshwaku said rescuers went down 15 metres when they started noticing oxygen deficiencies.
“The multi-disciplinary team, comprising paramedics, search and rescue experts, and law enforcement officials, is working tirelessly to locate the miners. The operation is complex and challenging, requiring careful planning and coordination to ensure the safety of all involved. The team utilises specialised techniques to navigate the hazardous terrain and locate the miners.”
MMC Tshwaku added that EMS, SAPS Search and Rescue, and Gauteng EMS are committed to providing a comprehensive and coordinated response to this emergency, prioritising the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
