Steve Komphela returns as Mamelodi Sundowns head coach

Mamelodi Sundowns has appointed veteran coach Steve Komphela as the new head coach ahead of the 2024–25 season.

The 57-year-old experienced trainer takes over from Rhulani Mokwena, who left the post by mutual consent in early July before a caretaker coach was put in charge.

This marks Komphela’s second stint in charge of Sundowns, having previously managed the side in 2023.

Steve will return to the position he held when Sundowns lifted the trophy in 2023, having been heavily involved in the side’s 2023 triumph as their co-coach.

Komphela is revered in South Africa for his innovation, tactical acumen, and ability to get the best out of the players at his disposal. His influence was never far from the Sundowns team as they defended their title, but the outspoken coach has also courted controversy at times.

When commenting on his new role, Steve Komphela said, “I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns, where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love. I am committed to contributing to the club’s achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African continent.”

Mamelodi Sundowns is currently training in South Africa for the upcoming season and will be leaving in a few days for Austria as part of its pre-season preparations.
